Bariatric Pre-Surgical Mental Health Evaluations
in Athens, GA
Supporting your emotional readiness for weight loss surgery. Thorough, compassionate clinical assessments in Athens, GA, and virtually for GA & SC.
A Strong Foundation for Your Surgical Success
Preparing for bariatric surgery means preparing emotionally and mentally, as well as physically. At Breaking the Cycle Psychotherapy Services, our bariatric evaluations are designed to help you understand your readiness for surgery and identify the supports that will enhance your recovery and long-term success.
The goal of this clinical assessment is not to determine 'worthiness' for surgery, but to provide you and your medical team with meaningful insight into how your emotional health and coping strategies can support your post-surgical adjustment.

Referrals & Process
How Bariatric Referrals Work
Bilingual Care: All assessments are available in both English and Spanish.
Locations: Evaluations are available in-person in Athens, GA, or virtually for clients in Georgia and South Carolina.
Clearance Process: After our interview, I provide a detailed clinical report to your referring surgeon or medical team to assist in your clearance process.
Referral Requirement: These evaluations are scheduled by doctor referral only. Your surgical team typically requires this assessment before final surgery approval.
Why Bariatric Evaluations Matter
Bariatric surgery is a tool, not a standalone solution. Sustainable success depends on maintaining new habits and developing healthier coping strategies. We help identify these areas early so you are set up for realistic, sustainable success.
Emotional Factors in Weight Loss Surgery
Food often serves a purpose beyond nutrition—it can be tied to comfort or stress relief. After surgery, losing that primary coping strategy can be challenging. We help you identify alternative emotional tools before the procedure.
What to Expect During the Process
We begin with a clinical interview gathering information on medical history, mental health history, and current emotional functioning. We discuss your relationship with food in a non-judgmental environment to identify patterns that may need extra support.
A Supportive, Non-Judgmental Assessment
Many individuals feel anxious about this step. Our evaluation is designed to prioritize your comfort and understanding. It is a space for transparency and honesty to ensure your medical team has the most accurate plan for your recovery.
